Dear all,

I have a full-time job and my PGWP is about to expire in a few months.

Can anybody tell me what is the difference between the open work permit and the closed work permit and the PGWP?

Am I eligible to extend my work permit and how long can I extend for?

Many thanks!

A closed work permit will require your employer to obtain an LMIA. Open work permits are only issues in very specific circumstances, such as being the spouse of a skilled worker or international student.

PGWP can't be extended. You'll need a new closed work permit which usually requires your employer to apply and pay for an LMIA first. These things take months so you need to explore your options or look at whether you qualify for PR.

Very clear. Thank you so much. It seems that my PGWP is an open work permit. I guess I just need to search how to extend an open work permit.

I heard about that if I in the process of applying PR, then I am eligible to extend my PGWP. I guess I need more information on top of this topic. Thank you for your information anyway!

Unfortunately PGWP is not extendable even if you are applying for PR.

As others have said, the PGWP cannot be extended. There is no further information that can be provided on this topic.

If you have applied for PR under an economic immigration program, your application has been accepted and you have received AOR - then you can apply for a bridging open work permit.

I am applying PR. However, my points are not enough as I am still working on it. What is AOR and how can I get it?

AOR is something you get after you have applied for PR, have been selected, have submitted your full application and your application has been accepted by IRCC. If you don't have enough points for PR, then you cannot get AOR.

Could you please let me know how many points needed to get the AOR recently? Thank you!

So I need to have 440 points first, and apply for PR second, and then receive the AOR, and then apply for the extension of work permit?

What if I only have 430 points and am in the pool. Can I apply extension in this case?

Any other method to make me eligible to work?

No - you cannot apply for an extension if you are in the pool. Again, you must have enough points to be selected and receive ITA. Then you have to submit your complete application and receive AOR. Only then can you apply for a BOWP.

I saw this on CIC website:

Who can apply for an open work permit?

    • applied for permanent residence in Canada
Being in the pool does not mean you have applied for PR. Yet again, you have to be selected, submit your complete application and receive AOR to qualify.
