Hi Forum members. We're Canadian PRs since October 2017 ( we did a soft landing back then for a week). We've returned permanently this past month and are looking to apply for Child Care Benefits for our 2 children, aged 8 and 5.

Now while seeing the form , it asks for previous year's tax returns. We did not file taxes for 2017 since we were only here a week and did not have any employment (we did open chequing accounts with $500 balances - no interest income there)

My question now is, Has anyone in a similar situation applied for CCB and received it? Would our not having filed taxes in the past year lead to a rejection?

Thanks in Advance for your feedback!

You need to show your international income for those periods.
So you’re saying that since the day you become a PR (regardless of soft landing) you have to pay income taxes on overseas work and/or interest income on savings?

No, whether or not one have to pay income taxes on overseas work and/or interest income on savings depends if they are Canadian tax resident for tax purposes. The OP became tax resident in 2018 only.

I am also having the same issue. I was landed last year with my husband for 17 days only and then returned back in february this year. My baby was born in june in Canada. Now when i am applying for his child benefit the CRA agent is asking about last year tax. He asked me to request to tax centre for a change in immigration date which is according to her feb 1st,2018 when i permanently moved here.

I just saw ur post. Did u find any information regarding how to apply for child benefit? If yes please share

You and your husband need to show your international income for last year (2017). It doesn't matter that you weren't in Canada and didn't need to file Canadian taxes.

Hi All,
We (Me, wife, 6 year old kid) did softlanding in April2018 and stayed in Canada for 5 days. After that we went back to India to wrap up things there.

I came back to Canada in Aug2018 to start my job and my wife alongwith kid joined me in October 2018.

So my question is from which month we are eligible to recieve child benefit?
a) From the day we became PR (April2018)
or
b) I came back to Canada for job (Aug2018)
or
c) My family (wife and kid) joined me (Oct2018)

Hello Canuck78,
My spouse applied for CCB for our 2 kids. In the documents sent to CRA, she put a copy of a void cheque which she got from her bank. The reason for putting it is so that they can send the money directly into her account. However, she got a letter from CRA stating that they cannot process the direct deposit request as her banking information is missing or incomplete. Now, my question is will CRA stop the CCB processing because of this or will they continue and issue a cheque instead of direct deposit? I'm just confused

You have figure that out with CRA. They are likely waiting for you to follow-up with your banking information. You have to lookout what your letter said.

Hi, we are also in the same situation. We did soft landing in July 2018 and permanently moved here a month back march 2020. Is it necessary to provide international income for getting CCB if we have not filed the tax yet. Also, does international income have any impact on CCB. Please advise. Thank you.
