Hi Everyone,

I wanted to know the experience of people who successfully got the citizenship after leaving Canada during application processing or immediately after the application was submitted.

Leaving Canada - I mean for a long time. Like left Canada and might have come for test/oath

It would be great if someone could shed a light on his/her application steps and hurdles or challenges faced.

I am in such a situation and wants to plan accordingly.

Thanks
Silvi

They removed the intent to reside, so I imagine you'd be okay. As per the requirement to get citizenship, you have to have lived in Canada 3 out of the 5 years immediately before you apply- so if you haven't lived in Canada for more than 5 years, you are not eligible for citizenship. Otherwise, I think it's alright.

I believe there were a few reported cases on this forum of people doing this and being successful in their application. As long as your application itself is solid (no red flags, easily meet RO), there should not be any issues.

I have a friend who submitted his application and then moved (permanently) to Europe 2 months later. The only issues this caused was that he had to fly back to Canada twice on fairly short notice - once for the test and once for the oath. So there's no reason why you can't do it, as long as you have the funds and the means to travel back to Canada when they require you to attend the test or oath.

You should be aware though that you are required to remain eligible for citizenship throughout the entire application process. This means maintaining your valid PR status. Now obviously if you have the physical presence required for citizenship you will also have met the requirements for PR, but it's not impossible that with any long processing delays a scenario could arise that causes issues. Unlikely, but something to be conscious of.

Thanks Quink, may I know in what year your friend received the citizenship or was this a recent case?

I am considering for the delays in processing too. Like I have around 2 years in buffer because I was present for 3 years starting from the time when I received PR.

Recent case. He was one of the October 2017 applicants who went from not qualifying to being eligible overnight when the rules changed. He ended up being processed in about 7 months I think, so got his citizenship around the end of spring 2018. He was a textbook no-problems case though, and still was pretty lucky with how fast it went for him.

Hi! By ‘moving permanently’ did he gave up Canadian residential ties and became non resident for tax purposes and thus updated his residential address to a place where he resides in Europe ?

I believe so, but he didn't need to actually declare that at any time during the application process. Applied October 2017, so his tax years in question were 2012-2016, which he was still a resident of Canada for.

As for his mailing address... he applied with his current Canadian address which he had at the time, and I don't know whether he updated that at all once he moved. All his correspondence through the process was via email. I suspect he just left it alone.
