Hello!

We have just moved to Canada for a period of 2 years for my husband’s job.. as luck would have it we found out that I am pregnant today. While we are excited, this one is a HUGE surprise. We hadn’t planned on having another baby until we moved home.

We have the governmental healthcare because we are tax equalized and will be paying taxes in Canada too. I would assume that costs would be covered for the most part by that and then the rest covered by our expat insurance, and some of out of pocket.

Also, if we choose to have the baby here (which is obviously more convenient) the baby is given Canadian citizenship automatically, right? . Do I apply for a Canadian passport or United States passport? I don’t want to have issues coming back and forth.

How long does it take to get all of this straightened out?

If anyone has any insight I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you!

What province are you in and when did you arrive? Have you left for over 30 days in the past 6 months? Yes babies born in Canada are automatically Canadian. Whether your child can get a US passport depends on the citizenship of the parents. It takes a month or two to get a birth certificate and around a month to get a passport. You should be paying Canadian taxes first followed by US taxes now that you are living in Canada and working through the Canadian offices.

We have been here for 10 days, so we haven’t left yet.

We are in Quebec.

Both of us are US citizens so he/she shouldn’t have an issue getting US citizenship I THINK.

Thanks for your help!

There is a 3 month waiting period for coverage. There seems to be an exception in some cases for pregnancy. Not sure if this is just for delivery. You need to register with RAMQ. You may struggle to find a family doctor especially since there has been a huge influx of people who have recently moved to the Montreal area. I would start calling around now so you identify your options before the 3 months. Then you'll need a referral to an OB or there is also the option of a midwife. Yes you can get your baby US citizenship after birth. My friends had to make an appointment at the US consulate plus fill out paperwork of course.
