Processing times are very slow right now due to the influx of refugees. So probably 2-3 years end to end.

No - you won't get a work permit right away. You get a work permit if the outcomes of your hearing are positive. Right now I believe people are waiting 8+ months for a hearing.

No - you absolutely should not renew your home country passport.

You should bring funds with you to Canada to pay for your living costs while you wait to qualify for a work permit. In some provinces you may also qualify for social services payments. However this money isn't very much and will not give you a good life.

Renewing your home country passport demonstrates that you do not face persecution in your home country and therefore don't qualify for refugee status.

Once you apply for asylum, you are no longer a visitor and your TRV is no longer valid

No, you won’t get approval right away. When you claim assylum, they will take your passport and all your ID from your home country. They will give you a document that identifies you as a refugee claimant and will schedule a hearing date for you to present your claim. That will take anywhere from 18-24 months. Until you have your hearing, you are a refugee claimant. If at the hearing they accept your claim you will become a refugee and be allowed to apply for a PR In Canada. That will take 2-3 years. You can never travel to your home country, or renew your passport or use your home country passport again. If they reject your claim, they will start the process to send you back to your home country.

If you are in Alberta as a refugee claimant, you can not obtain a drivers license. You will get minimal funds to survive, housing for one year and have access to health care.

Just want to correct a few things. You can now get a driver's license in Alberta as a refugee. An asylum seeker recently took the government to court. also think you are supposed to find your own housing and pay for it using the welfare you get.

Once you get the medical exam done you can apply for work permit regardless of the hearing date and decision
It takes about 2 months to get the permit from the date of entry
