Good afternoon . It's been a long time since I've been on here and have a quick question . I tried the search and can't find an answer.

Asking for a friend. She is currently on Ontario works (welfare ) she is getting married in October and wants her spouse to be able to stay here . Can she apply inland and still get sponsorship approval ?

No - she can't. She needs to get off OW before she submits the sponsorship application and remain off OW while the application is being processed.

Is there a certain amount of time that shes needs to be off it before she will be approved for sponsorship?

And thank you for your help

I would go with at least three months.

She also needs to remain off of OW for three years after her spouse lands and becomes a PR. Otherwise she can expect the government to go after her for repayment of any OW taken during this period.

There will be an interest on how long your friend has depended upon the state for their very existence as a measure of the ability to "sponsor" someone who will not be expected to rely upon the state. If the sponsor is a chronic recipient of social assistance then this love may have to be fulfilled in another nation, perhaps the prospective immigrant can sponsor your friend to live outside of Canada?

Coming off the dole for a bit won't work if the person has been accepting government assistance frequently or for a long time. Why would they in such an instance where someone is merely subsisting and unable to meet any of their own basic needs?
