Having a legal immigration status simply means you are not in the country illegally. He should be aware of whether or not he is there legally.

"Visitor" is a legal immigration status in the country that issued the visitor visa (Malaysia).

Malaysia....Types of Visa

Assuming your husband has a valid Malaysian multiple entry visitor visa with duration from July-18-2018 to July-18-2019 (12 months multiple entry visa).

Also, assuming each entry allows the visitor to stay in Malaysia for a maximum of 3months.....and your husband entered Malaysia on July 20th 2018.

If he overstayed in Malaysia after the 3months single entry and did not apply or approved for visitor visa extension beyond the 3months.......he will be out-of-status......and his Status in this case will be "out-of-status" in Malaysia.

If he either left after the 3 months (as multiple entry visa allows visitors to leave and re-enter) or got approved for visa extension......his Status remains valid as "Visitor" in Malaysia.

Holding a visitor visa in his passport does not give him legal immigration status while outside Canada. It only gives him ability to come to Canada. It does not give him automatic entry into Canada. He still need to satisfy border agent that he will not overstay or work in Canada. Once he is allowed entry into Canada, only then does he has "legal immigration status". Only then would he have a "legal" visitor status inside Canada.

I read her question as stating he is currently living in Malaysia and his status there is visitor.

Sorry, my mistake. I misread her post. I thought her husband living in Malaysia has a Canadian Visa in his passport and she was asking about the Canadian Visitor Visa.
