Applied for a visitor extension within canada. Do I have to send my passport?

I just applied for a visitor visa within Canada, since I am waiting for my sponsorship to be approved. My student status has expired and this is why I decided to apply as a visitor.
My question is If I have to send my passport after it is approved? In my account online they say they only needed a copy and If they decided they need the passport they would tell me.
I have a trip booked for the end of the month and even If they approve it I won't have enough time to send my passport.
