I am an Indian citizen with a canada PR for several years. I wish to apply for canada citizenship
but worry about having to give up Indian citizenship. I know I can get OCI card but what if I lose
Canada citizenship for some reason, will I become stateless? Will I be able to get back Indian citizenship?

With OCI Card you can stay in India for ever and apply for Private Jobs. If you lost your Canadian Citizenship, you can apply for Indian Citizenship again after 5 years of stay in India.

Seniors, please correct me if I was wrong

Thanks

Canada is a signatory to the UN convention on the reduction of statelessness. This means that Canada agreed to have no laws that can render a person stateless. In other words, Canada cannot take away your citizenship if this would render you stateless. Note that an important exception in the convention and also in Canadian laws is misrepresentation and fraud. So if you acquire citizenship fraudulently, the convention doesn't protect you.

In short: If you get your citizenship the legal way and give up your indian citizenship, you will never lose your canadian citizenship. Even if you murder someone.

Please don't murder anyone though :)

Thanks a lot. But with his OCI Card he can stay in India for an indefinite period right? and then he can apply for Indian Citizenship. Apologies if this is stupid.

Thanks. No fraud or misrepresentation. Mine is a straightforward case. It is just the thought that who knows in future years what citizenship laws will change in Canada.

https://blsindia-canada.com/ocihome.php says:

An Individual registered as OCI is eligible to apply for grant of Indian citizenship under section 5(1) (g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 if he/she is registered as OCI for five years and has been residing in India for one year out of the five years before making the application

(it also indicates, on that page, that OCI is a lifelong multiple entry visa, and explains the rights you have as an OCI in India)

BJP could be out in next innings and the new govt could make new rules and regulations and sometimes the OP could be a stateless person ....in future with certain new procedures. So think many times if you are a Manoj Kumar.

Who is Manoj Kumar?

For curiosity's sake, what happens to people who are not dual citizens and whose Canadian citizenship is taken away while in Canada.
They are sent to an island in the Pacific ocean :p JK

You do not need to be worried about this at all. Get you Canadian citizenship, surrender your Indian citizenship and get your OCI. Even if laws in the future change, they will only impact new citizens. They cant turn away thousands of citizenships suddenly. Logic.

Yes, but this is a hypothetical scenario. The OP would never lose his Canadian citizenship.

He/she could of course apply for indian citizenship again, but would then have to give up their canadian citizenship.

But as all the others already said, it is a completely irrelevant scenario that the OP would lose Canadian citizenship once acquired legally. Note that EVEN while that strip-terrorists-of-citizenhip clause was in effect (which was abolished by C-6) had the exception that the citizenship can only be taken away if that person has another citizenship.

In other words: Even the Harper government didn't even let terrorists be stateless.

Dude, you should stop worrying. Not just for Canada, generally it is very hard to revoke citizenship of someone in any country. It is not as easy as you think. It is lot easier to revoke permanent residency, and if you have had no issues on that, why are you going to have one on citizenship which is lot harder to revoke?

What's the probability of Canada turning into a new North Korea ?
If OP thinks it's not 0, well, better pack and leave before it's too late :)

What is ur age?
I will suggest you stay a PR till as long as you live since if you take citizenship you will get nightmares and it could lead to sleepless nights affecting you very badly.
You will hear sounds etc or maybe feel you are being transported to KALAPAANI for torture.
