Hello all, I’m British and live with my Canadian wife (she's a Citizen) in China teaching English for the past four years.
Our daughter recently died during childbirth and we no longer wish to remain in China.
We’re looking to move to Canada together but after what happened we won’t have much in the way of savings ($7000) when we plan to leave in July. We want to remain together after what happened so we plan travel to Canada together and I will enter the country on a tourist visa and then apply for sponsorship. We would be staying with family while we step up our lives again and my wife finds a job.
How does our plan sound?

I have some concerns about our plan and that I’m hoping people can answer them:
1) Will I be denied entry to Canada, especially with my wife not having a job and I not having strong ties to the UK, if I join her on a tourist visa when we return in July?
Should I advise the border officials of our plan?
2) I want to work as soon as possible in Canada and I’ve read you can apply for an open work permit with the sponsopship visa so I’m looking to reduce the time I’d have to wait before beginning work.
Can I apply for a sponsorship visa whilst we are in China and continue the application in Canada?

Thank you in advance for all of the help. It’s very much appreciated.

I think its a good plan. If your wife were to apply to sponsor you while in China, she will be required to provide proof to convince IRCC that your family plans to move to Canada after the PR visa has been issued. Your sponsorship could be refused if IRCC is in doubt.

Although your wife could sponsor you while in China, its better to apply for sponsorship while in Canada if you truly plan to enter Canada in July.

British citizens traveling with British passport could enter Canada as tourist. While you have legal Residency Status, you could apply for sponsorship "INLAND".

You will not be denied entry except you have any issues that make you inadmissible like terrorism or criminal issues.

Really do not think you should advise the border officials of your plan except becomes very necessary.

Although your wife could sponsor you while in China, its better to apply for sponsorship while in Canada.

When you apply for spousal sponsorship, you could also apply for work permit.

Hi

Sorry for your loss.

Your plan sounds fine. In terms of deciding between inland and outland, I suggest you find the London thread and see what the recent timelines are for British applicants. If you come here in July and apply inland, it will be about November before you get the OWP and likely another 8 months or so before you become a PR. Depending on the current timelines for outland, if you apply ASAP, you may be a PR by the end of the year. As I said, have a look for the London thread, as there is a detailed spreadsheet.

1. You will not be denied entry as long as you understand that you will be entering as a visitor, not moving to Canada. Don't volunteer information but don't lie. If they ask further, explain you are applying for sponsorship. If you are waiting to apply inland, pay the full PR fees ahead of time and have that receipt. If you apply outland beforehand, have proof of the app like the sponsor approval letter.

2. As explained above.

If you apply outland from China, the app remains outland even if you come to Canada during the process. You will not be eligible for a work permit but would be a PR much faster.
