Hi there, Im Canadian Citizen and my partner is Filipina but working in New Zealand for 3years now. We've been together for 12 years but because her family is homophobic and due to religious beliefs we can't live together. Now that we're both matured enough I'm planning to sponsor her so she can live with me here in canada. I visited her in New Zealand once and we've met twice in Los Angeles. I spoke with a lawyer earlier but he said there's a little chance of being successful in the application as conjugal partner, that we should get married first. We can't get married at the moment because of her family issues. Our documents were pretty much complete. I'm sending her monthly allowance, we have friends who can attest our relationship, we have heaps of photos together and she's my beneficiary in my insurance. Just the conjugal property that we dont have at the moment. Is there anyone here who have the same situation? Any suggestions? Thank you for those who will help.

Don't waste your money on a conjugal application. It will fail.

The lawyers are correct. There is nothing barring you from either living together for 12 consecutive months to become common law or to just get married. Her family being homophobic is not a bar to immigration, that is a personal issue. The same for 'religious' purposes.

What's stopping you from getting married in New Zealand? Also, you could have married when you were on vacation in the US. What is the explanation you plan to provide to explain why you haven't gotten married yet? (Family objections won't be accepted as an explanation.)

So you can't get married due to her family reasons, but they will have no problem with her moving to Canada to live with you?

To repeat what others have said, there is no reason you can't get married as she can obviously travel to multiple countries where same-sex marriage is allowed. You don't need her family to approve to do a small courtroom marriage on your own (as you said you are mature enough to make your own decisions), so this is a personal reason and will not be allowed to justify a conjugal app.
