Hello,

I was accepted to study at University of Waterloo and my student permit was refused. The reason: Purpose of visit and personal assets and financial status.

I studied in USA and have a bank account there. It has 50000 USD. The company is sponsoring my education as well.
I have an apartment in my name and a car in my home country. Submitted those documents as well.

What else can be submitted?

You should provide you complete profile. What studies have you completed in the past? What were you planning on studying at Waterloo? Do you have any work experience and if so, what kind? What company is sponsoring your education - your employer? What evidence did you provide to prove they will be supporting your education? How long have you been working for them?

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Houston.
Plan to study Master of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering at University of Waterloo
1.5 years in the USA and 2 years in my home country
The company that will be sponsoring my education is not my employer. It is the company who interviewed me and offered to sponsor my education if I work with them after. They attached a letter stating the sum.

Get Caips note and go from there. Check Google, this forum and cic.gc.ca to know how to obtain one.

Several thing might have gone wrong. It is tough to predict without CAIPS.

Doesn't it take 5-6 weeks? Can't wait that long :/

~30 days. Further preparation from your side may take a week more.
It is wiser to wait and know the reason of refusal and then specifically address it. A blind reapplication may not be fruitful. You can ask your institute for deferred admission to next semester.

Your background is strong. Based on given information I can not see an obvious reason for refusal ( except for well establishment in career and no further need for study to improve it?? Not sure though). It may very well end up being a silly reason (somebody got rejected because bank statement did not have a stamp on 2nd page!) which can be fixed in 10 min but you will have no idea what it is unless you get your Caips.

I don't really understand why someone will get rejected on the grounds of the establishment in the career. In that case, there is no reasons to do MBA or any advanced degrees at all! Bachelor degree gives opportunities to work in the field and even MBA is kinda useless. However, good MBA costs 120000 $ (Wharton, Kelly or Harvard) and therefore, there is a need for advanced degree.

Thank you for the feedback anyways.

You're welcome!

Of course higher degrees are important. But from CIC perspective, if you are well established in your field after bachelor's, financially well off and no direct evidence of proposed study bringing improvement in career, they tend to think that your real objective is immigration, not to study and come back.

It is OK to apply for higher degrees even if you are well established, just take care of the "proposed study bringing improvement to career"; it should be fine.

Just my opinion though.

Good point. I wouldn't go if the company would not be paying for my education. I came back after the US and got a job that pays me 4 times of the average salary in the country. After Masters, I will hit even a higher number without paying a single penny for education (just food and travel expenses).

The weird thing is that what kind of personal assets do they expect? I have an apartment in the city and a car. I have a bank account from the US and the company is sponsoring me. The sponsor expect me to go back and work for them and if I don't, I have to pay everything back and that's a lot.

So I don't really understand CIC.

Honestly, I think that this is just a BS reason. Highly doubt CAIPS notes will be any useful. I don't really understand what kind of personal assets they expect. An apartment, a car, a summer house, a plane and a yacht? 90 % of people don't have any of those and that's perfectly understandable.

And for financial reasons: a company is sponsoring me. They pay for everything. For travelling and food, I attached the US account that I opened when I was in the USA. Not a small, shady bank either. A huge financial group. And converting USD -> CAD will show that I have more than enough to travel as much as I want and eat pretty well.

CIC just doesn't make sense.

You own a plane and a yacht? If that was not a sarcasm, you are wasting your time here!

I agree for your case personal assets makes no sense. But can there be any silly mistakes in the documents (like the bank statement stamp)? If so, CAIPS will be really helpful to pin it down.
