my fiancé and I are planning a very small and personal civil ceremony in two weeks time. I got my marriage license yesterday but I didn't realize I wouldn't get a certificate or something of the sort right after the ceremony and that I will have to wait months for the wedding to be registered and only then can I actually order the certificate. Can I still go ahead and start/submit my application right after the ceremony?

Unless you qualify for common-law, you must submit the marriage certificate. Where are you getting married? In Quebec, you can get it in less than 10 days. I think in Ontario it is also relatively short, 2-3 weeks if I'm not wrong.

I'm in Ontario... I was told that after the ceremony the officiant submits for the marriage to be registered and the registration process can take 6-8 weeks if not longer and I can only apply for the actual certificate once the marriage is actually registered.

Other members have reported that you can ask them to expedite the process so you can have your MC less than the time you mentioned.. Not sure if you have to pay extra for that. I believe you have to include a letter/note saying you need it for sponsorship purposes and that you need it asap.

You need the marriage certificate. Without it, the app will most likely be returned as incomplete. As said above, you can request urgent processing to submit your PR app.
