do you consider alberta/calgary a part of a high tier school or you consider them among the average universities?
I am asking you because you have been living there for 5years so you can guide better.
I mean lets say if i forget about fee for once then in which university should i go for?
I have been deliberately ignoring Toronto,Waterloo,UBC because of their high fee structure and my GPA so if i score good GRE score so should i go for UBC,Waterloo or Alberta/Calgary is good enogh too to put it on your resume?

GRE score are your last hope. Make no mistake, you can definitely get into some schools in Canada or Australia with your GPA, but those will be 2nd or most probably 3rd Tier schools. So work hard on your GRE and try to ace it. If you have to take it multiple times so be it!

Secondly I am not presently living in Canada, else I wouldn't be on this forum I guess. 8)

Alberta / Calgary are both good universities in Canada, Alberta is significantly better in my opinon, but unfortunately they are not accepting admissions to MEng program for fall-2013 session

I wouldn't recommend to apply to Toronto or Waterloo because they are way too expensive, Toronto is I believe 30,000 CAD per year.
Get organized, get your act together, Put a big chart on the wall of the room, mark the universities and put all the courses you want to apply to, look at the average GPA requirements, put up universities rankings, fees etc and then you will know which universities to apply to.

DONOT go for 1 year Master programs. I repeat. Donot go for 1 year masters program. Its not worth it, the PGWP is of too short duration and the chances of getting PR also gets slimmer.

A few universities you could choose from are: (In no particular order)

- Calgary
- Victoria
- Saskatchewan
- Dalhousie
- Windsor
- Memorial

Also try and apply to norwegian universities, there is no fee and the immigration policies are also quite flexible.

Guys i did my BS chemical engg recently.. and the things i heard from some of the students studying there are your work experience in respective field and GPA does matter.if you have got low gpa,you should have strong reasons to justify why it was low. secondly on their web its written the students from south asia should have atleast 65 percent .. i think as some1 wrote , your GRE can hide your GPA,so go for it.. score good in it,put some strong refrences from your prev MEntors,and leave rest on GOD,. and i wanted to know whats the scope of Chemical Engg there? does one get job easily aftr MENG?

As for the your queries, as much as I can understand: if you have already heard from your friends who are already in Canada; I doubt whatever we say would be of any importance to you. But still I will throw in my two cents. Yes good relevant experience and good GRE scores help mitigate lower GPA / percentages. But if your percentage is below 65% then I doubt that anything can help you. You will have to be realistic about your available university choices and apply accordingly. I can't recommend you anything as you haven't shared your academic background with us.

Best advice I can give you is to score good in GRE, get good recommendation letters while justifying your lower GPA / percentages.

Secondly nobody can guarantee if you can find a job there after graduating. Not even the Prime Minister of Canada. It depends on your hard work, your social circle, your academics, your aptitude and your luck. You can try to go to online job portals and search for chemical engineering jobs to get a feel of it. That may help you make a more informed decision.

In my opinion, O/A level results don't really matter when you are applying for a graduate program. Also don't bother applying for a Masters by research program either. It will be a waste of time, energy and money. You need research publications and excellent academics to get into one of those programs. I know they are much cheaper than MEng programs, but the competition is fierce and places limited.

NUST or no NUST, you have to accpet that your GPA is on the lower side. You should apply for 2 good school, 2 reach schools and 1 low school. You should also take GRE and try to excellent scores (90 percentile or more) to mitigate your lower GPA. Also you should try and explain in you SOP the reasons behind your low GPA scores. The addmission committe must be able to relate to you when they look at your application. It can't just be numbers and statistics, in which you will lose.

I would say it again. A good GRE will help you a lot in getting to a better school.




Alos I would suggest not to look at school fees at this time. Apply to the best school you can and once you get the admission try to sort out the finances. Borrow, sell your car / property whatever. Saving 10-20k in shcool fees is not worth it. Trust me!! You are going to carry that school's name on you resume for the rest of your life. 10 lakh or 20 lakh rupees doesn't merit a lower teir school.

Dalhousie,Concordia universities are asking around 15-16k which i cannot afford.

Alberta is an option because of its lower fee comparatively.Its around 9k so thats somehow i can manage.
Any other good universities that you guy know who have a max tuition fee of 10k per year on full time program (Course Work)?

Try U of Saskatchewan and U of Regina. Both are quite cheaper and not bad in ranks. But in U of Saskatchewan, even for coourse-based program, you have to contact a supervisor and preferably in Regina as well

Master of Petroleum Engineering (Course Based)
IELTS: 8.0
Work Exp: 3.5 years in petrochemical company.

and have read that petroleum engineering has the max competition as only alberta and calgary are having this petroleum engg masters. other universities are there too but i dont consider regina or newfoundland universities as universities.
