Anyone experienced a CBSA flag related to an old removal order?
Protected person and now a Canadian PR. I recently travelled to the US with RTD and, when returning to Canada, CBSA kept me waiting at the booth for about 5–10 minutes while the officer called someone to double-check my status.
The officer mentioned there’s a flag on my file related to an old removal order, but that the order isn’t active anymore. I wasn’t sent to secondary inspection and was allowed through without any issues.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Does this flag eventually get removed once you’re a PR, or does it stay until you become a Canadian citizen? Just curious how it works and whether anyone has managed to get it cleared.

Why do people that claim asylum here think there previous history suddenly just disappears ?

However, before granting PR or citizenship, IRCC conducts background checks and may share information with relevant Canadian authorities and foreign partners, where applicable. So, it’s understandable to wonder how an old removal-order flag could remain on your file after becoming a PR.

It may be that the flag is simply a historical record rather than an active enforcement issue. Still, only CBSA can confirm why it remains and whether it can be updated or removed. Since you were allowed to enter Canada without further issues, that’s reassuring. Still, it’s best to get clarification directly from CBSA rather than assume the flag will disappear automatically after citizenship.

This 2nd security check it will stay with you till you get Citizenship and after that you or your mp should contact cbsa by webform and attach your Canadians passport and citizenship certificate and ask to remove the red flag.
Regarding usa border, once u get Citizenship, you should submit Department of Homeland Security Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) after filling the form and after that they will reply by removing this red flag.

Thanks for the information. I’m curious whether there’s an official CBSA guideline stating that citizenship is required to remove the flag. I looked into it but couldn’t find anything specific.

Regarding DHS TRIP, I haven’t had any issues entering the US. The additional verification only happens when I return to Canada. The CBSA officer mentioned that there’s no active removal order, but there is still some kind of flag on my file.
I’ve submitted an ATIP request to CBSA to get more information. Just wondering if the citizenship requirement is something CBSA confirmed or if it’s based on personal experience.

When you apply for citizenship, IRCC may review your file and notice the flag on your record. If you wait until then to address it, resolving the issue could potentially delay your citizenship application. Therefore, I would recommend following up with CBSA and taking the necessary steps to clarify and resolve the flag now, rather than waiting for it to disappear on its own or hoping it will be resolved when you become a citizen. Hopefully, your ATIP request will provide some clarity

Reactions: Refugee2024
I dunno if this is a general thing. Because I’ve traveled out several times and never had any issue apart from the usual checks.

I didn’t know about this either until my first trip back to Canada from the US. CBSA officer mentioned an old departure order on my file, but said it wasn’t active. I believe it’s related to the refugee claim process.
He was actually nice and just asked me to wait while he called another officer to verify my status. It took around 10 minutes, but I wasn’t sent to secondary inspection.
My only concern is whether this will happen every time I cross the border. The officer also suggested contacting CBSA for more information about the flag. That’s pretty much my experience so far.
