Personal bankruptcy while Visitor Record application is pending — any first-hand experience?

Has anyone filed a personal bankruptcy in Canada while an in-Canada Visitor Record application was still pending?


A friend is currently on maintained status with a Visitor Record application in process and is considering filing a straightforward personal bankruptcy for unsecured consumer debt.


We’re specifically looking for first-hand experiences:

• Did you notify IRCC after filing?
• Did IRCC ask for any additional financial documents?
• Did the bankruptcy appear to affect the Visitor Record decision?

Legal advice is already being sought, but we’d also like to hear from anyone who has actually been through a similar situation.

Yes filing bankruptcy could influence whether someone can visit Canada since they should have limited funds to support themselves after filing for bankruptcy and they have not been responsible with their spending in Canada. This is a fairly rare situation. If temporary residents file bankruptcy they typically have plans to leave. They must have spent time in Canada already so that alone may make getting approved for a visitor record more difficult.
