Hi everyone,
My Temporary Resident Permit extension application was returned because it was sent to the wrong office. I have now received a PR Portal P1 email saying my permanent residence application is ready for finalization. My TRP and work permit expired on August 20, 2026. I want to know whether I should resubmit the TRP application now or wait for my PR confirmation.

Thanks

Assume you are inside of Canada. If so you need to apply to restore your status because you need status in Canada to qualify for PR. Have you replied to the P1?

Resubmit TRP application. P1 to eCoPR can take too long too sometimes.

I would not simply wait for PR confirmation.

A P1 email means your PR application is at the finalization stage, but it does not by itself give you temporary resident status or authorization to work.

Since your TRP and work permit expired on August 20, the important point is that TRP applicants do not benefit from maintained status. IRCC says that if a TRP expires before a new one is issued, the person loses temporary resident status.

Also, if a TRP application is returned/refused as incomplete, IRCC treats it as if it was never submitted.

So I would deal with the status issue now rather than assume P1 will protect you. Whether you should submit a new TRP, seek restoration, or use another option depends on the exact basis of your status and PR application, so this is one of those situations where getting case-specific advice from IRCC or a licensed immigration lawyer/RCIC would be sensible.

And unless you currently have separate authorization to work, I would not keep working just because the PR file is at P1 stage.
