Hi everyone,

I have a question about 3 year tax filing rule for citizenship application. I landed in July of 2023 and dint land a job till February of 2024. But I filed my taxes for 2023 which were 0 because I had no income. Since then I have filed my taxes on time. My question is if that 2023 tax return filed would count in the 3 years tax return rule?

Thanks for your time and assistance.

Yes, it counts. There's no minimum income requirement or anything of the sort.

A $0-income return may still be relevant, but the key is whether you were required to file for that tax year. I’d recommend checking your CRA records to confirm that the 2023 return was processed. The citizenship requirement depends on the applicable taxation years and filing obligations. For more information, you can also review this tax resource.

Yes, I see the NOA for my 2023 tax year even when the return was 0 (as I had no income to report)
