Citizenship Application - Expired and Seized Passport Situation

Hi All,

I am filling out my Canadian Citizenship application, and I am struggling with the Travel Documents or Passports section.

Have you ever held travel documents or passports during your 5-year eligibility period?​

List all of your travel documents or passports covering your 5-year eligibility period.

• If there are any gaps between documents, provide an explanation.
• You will be asked to show us the original documents during the processing of your application.

So, I am applying as a protected person PR.
I came in with a passport (that's now expired, but the expiry date is within my 5-year eligibility period). When I submitted a refugee claim, IRCC seized my passport. So I don't actually have that passport in hand. Luckily, I have a scanned copy of the bio page of that passport, but that's about it.

I also hold a refugee travel document that I got 3 years ago. The refugee travel document is still valid.

I haven't really traveled outside of Canada in the last 5 years anyway.

I am confused about that second bullet point. "You will be asked to show us the original documents during the processing of your application."
I don't have my expired passport with me (it is still seized by IRCC) so I can't provide the original of it to IRCC if they ask for it.

So my question is, should I upload both my expired passport and my current refugee travel document, or only my current active refugee travel document?

Upload everything you have and don't worry about it. For the vast majority of applicants, IRCC doesn't ask to validate the documents through in interview, and if they do, well, you tell the truth, which will satisfy them. Also, in the section where you're supposed to explain any gap between validities, you can just say that you're providing a copy of a passport IRCC took when you applied for asylum. Good luck.

I do have a gap in validities, I am applying Online, do I need to provide a letter of explanation? and if yes how?
