Looking for guidance on a medical-related immigration situation (Canada)

Hi everyone,


I’m looking for guidance from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation or has experience with Canadian immigration.


I came to Canada as an international student and later received a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Around the time I graduated, I developed ocular tuberculosis (TB). Although I was experiencing symptoms for months, it took approximately six months before my treatment started, and I then underwent about eight months of intensive treatment.


During that period, my condition and the medication significantly affected my vision, energy levels, and daily functioning. Even so, I continued working in basic jobs to support myself financially because I had no other option. Due to my health, I wasn’t able to fully use my PGWP to obtain skilled employment related to my education during a large part of its validity.


After completing treatment and recovering, I was eventually able to find skilled employment and have continued working.


My PGWP is now close to expiring, and I’m wondering whether there are any legal options to ask IRCC to consider the exceptional medical circumstances that prevented me from making full use of my work permit.


My questions are:

1. Has anyone successfully made a request to IRCC based on serious medical circumstances that occurred while in Canada?
2. Is there any type of application or request where IRCC can consider compassionate or exceptional circumstances related to losing much of the benefit of a work permit because of a documented illness?
3. If not, are there any other legal pathways I should explore before my status expires?

I have medical records documenting my diagnosis, treatment timeline, and recovery. I’m not asking whether approval is guaranteed—I understand that every case is different. I’m simply trying to understand whether there is a legitimate legal process for someone in my situation.


I would really appreciate any guidance or experiences others are willing to share.

Simple answer, no. You worked during your PGWP. And PGWP is issued once.

The only option is H&C but the processing time is multiple decades at this point with no guarantee of approval so not really a viable option for you although you can still apply. Applying does not secure you a WP and doesn’t prevent removal. Your best option is likely to return home and work towards PR there unless you are able to secure a WP. Do you know French? Is there a shortage of your skills in Canada? Are you waning a high wage? Are you from an area with relatively low unemployment? Would your employer be willing to try to secure a WP for you? When does your PGWP expire?

I am afraid H&C is not applicable for PGWP extension.
