Hi all — quick heads-up: a rule that came into force on Oct 1, 2025 means people under an active sponsorship may be ineligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for the full sponsorship period of 20 years. So the youngest age parents can access GIS is 75, whether they work or pay taxes in Canada or not!

If you sponsored a parent/grandparent outside Quebec and they landed around 2014–2017, this could affect them when they turn 65.

Check this out: https://sites.google.com/view/gisgap/home

If this sounds like you, I hope we can connect via that site!

Why should the Government give out benefits when it was agreed upon when sponsored that the sponsor could afford and support them when they are here ?

I agree! This is taking away from Canadians/PR's that have spent years putting into the system. As it is, you have to spend 40 years working here to get the full CPP so for someone to be able to get GIS and never having worked or working very little feels very unfair.
