I am renewing my PR status. The pdf form imm5444 has a checkbox for "consent to information disclosure", which allows the authority to check your records, but the online portal application does not have this checkbox. I did not provide any proof of residency for my first PR application, and it passed.

You are renewing your PR card, not your PR 'status'. Status always remains active even with an expired card, unless you have not fulfilled your residency obligations of course (must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the past five years).

Not sure how things used to work in the past, but I renewed my card for the first time (online) in October of last year. I had to upload a pdf with two pieces of evidence to support i had met my residency obligations.

There is an instruction guide online. Look for what's required now in 'Appendix A' for Online PR Card Renewals (for the residency obligation proof / evidence part) - guide linked below

Read through that guide.

Additionally, the below linked thread or (other similar ones), should answer your questions on how to go about the proof of residency portion - https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-i...dency-documents-queries.875035/#post-11111764
