I realize this is quite simplistic, and I need to do a ton more research, but I was hoping to get some bullet points as an outline to see if what I’m looking at is even plausible.

I’m a subspecialist doc in the US, 38, my husband and I have two kids. I’d like to move to Canada in ~5 years, practice somewhere less high stress and far fewer hours (hence the 5 years, hoping to save up a cushion). Is it possible to apply for some sort of residency now and not pursue employment and a move for 5 years?

Is this plausible or just a pie in the sky

Not possible and you currently may not actually qualify for any immigration program. That likely will change in the near future. As a PR you would need to meet the residency requirement of living in Canada for 2 out of 5 years. Do you know French?
