I just got my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) approved through Express Entry (FSW), and I'm planning to land in Canada in about two months. Super excited and grateful for this journey so far

But I’ve run into a bit of confusion that I hope someone here can help me with...

My passport is expiring in 5 months, and I just realized that might be an issue when I try to land. My COPR is valid until December 15, 2025 (based on my medical), but I’m not sure if CBSA will allow entry with a passport that has less than 6 months' validity — even though everything is technically still within the valid window.
A few questions I have:
  • Will I face any issues landing with a passport that expires 5 months from my landing date?
  • Should I try to renew my passport before I travel, even though that would mean re-issuing the COPR?
  • Has anyone here landed with a short-validity passport and had no issues?
I’ve emailed IRCC but haven’t received a reply yet, and I’m starting to stress out a little. Any insights or personal experiences would really help!
Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that a COPR and the IM visa are valid without being subject to the usual six months rule.

That said, complications can occur (like what if the airline is not aware/decides to be picky, even if what I said is true) and time is tight.

If you are coming from a country that allows more than one passport and can renew and receive the new one soon, you can travel with both.

So it's not ideal, you'll have to decide. In principle getting the COPR/IMM visa re-issued is not that time consuming.

Whatever you decide to do, I wouldn't drag things out. If you want to travel as is, the sooner the better. If you decide to renew - submit ASAP.
