Hello,

I have just completed a Medical Language certificate program from a DLI here in Canada. It is a 15 Credit Unit (5 courses) program.

I intend applying for a PGWP with the certificate program.

I spoke with a student advisor at my university and with an immigration lawyer and they both said similar things; that they're not sure if the program is PGWP eligible because, the immigration officer that would process my application could view the program as a program that can be completed within four months.

Technically, it can't be completed within four months as two of the required courses are a prerequisite for the other two. Hence, there's no way I could have been able to take a prerequisite and it's succeeding course in the same term.

The smallest period of time one can spend to obtain this certificate is 8 months, which should indicate that it is a PGWP eligible program.
However, it took me a year and half to complete the program.

But right now, I need help. I am confused on what to do.

Please, I'd like to ask if there is any one who has gone through or is going through a similar issue or has an idea on what I can do next?

Thank you.

Is the program on the PGWP list? When did you start the program? Were you full time for the program? Apply and find out.

I don't see the program's name written verbatim on the PGWP list, but, it has some relationship with the Medical Assistant program/role, which is on the list.

Furthermore, I started the program in the Winter term of 2024 and I did maintain full-time status while I took the program.

I am being wary and hesitant to apply for a PGWP as I'm not sure of how I will be affected if I don't get the PGWP. Because by then, I will have been out of the University that I am currently in, which would require me to start a fresh, new application.

Should I be denied a PGWP, can I remain in the country and process a new study visa or will I have to leave the country first, please?

Thank you.

When was your study permit approved because may still be eligible with language test. Do you meet language requirements?

No one can tell you if it will be approved and if it is for what length. Your study permit expires 90 days after completion so if refused, you most likely will be out of status. Apply for a visitor record now in case of refusal to maintain status. You can apply for study permit as a visitor but it is processed from home country and if approved, you will have to leave the country and re-enter to activate it. You cannot flagpole so need to leave for a few days and return. Getting a new permit, when you had one will make it more challenging to justify why you must take the program in Canada.
