Hello everyone,

I’m in a bit of a confusing situation and need some guidance.

I’m currently in Quebec, in my 4th semester, and my program is scheduled to finish on September 15. However, one of my courses and the internship were never conducted at all. The teacher (who is also our program coordinator) hasn’t replied to our emails, and when I spoke to the international advisor, they didn’t do anything either. It seems like they’ll just make up grades and close the program.

Now, because of Bill 96, I have to submit a B2 level French certificate, and I need more time to achieve that. So I’m thinking about enrolling in a 1-year course to extend my time here.

Here’s my situation:

My study permit is valid until April 2026.

My CAQ is valid until January 2026.

If I choose another program in my current college, do I need to apply for a new study permit, or can I continue with my current one and just apply for an extension later?

To be honest, I don’t really want to stay at the same college—they don’t seem to care about students at all. If I go to another college in Quebec, would the requirement be the same (new permit vs. extension)?

Also, if anyone knows of any better solution for my situation, I’d really appreciate the advice.

Thanks in advance!

What is the purpose of taking a one year course? Have you even completed the first program? Why not focus on French to get PGWP for 2 year program? You need a new study permit if you change DLI.

So are you leaving Quebec to start a new program? If so you need to extend your permit with a new study permit. You cannot study until the new permit is approved if you change DLI.

No am not leaving quebec. Am thinking doing 1 more year course in the same college or going to another one.

Okay so just trying to understand. Are you dropping your current program and not graduating? If staying at current DLI, then submit a study permit extension. If changing DLI then get new LOA and apply for a new study permit. Cannot study at new school until approved.

Read the rules for changing DLI/programs on the IRCC site to really understand the process.

No am not dropping, they will not give me completion letter unless i gave b2 level french certificate.
My program will finish this september, and i have permit till april 2026 and caq till january 2026.

Your study permit expires 90 days after program completion. So you need to either a)stay in same school and extend or b) change DLI and apply for new study permit with explanation.

Read the IRCC site for changing DLIs/moving between programs.
