Hello there, I just recently applied to travel documents as my PR application is still in progress I'm protected person now. Since arrived to Canada I didn't travel anywhere. I just found different informations online and I'd like to ask your experiences. Online it says canadian refugee travel documents are not equal to canadian passport so need visa if traveling certain countries. Anyone has experience to travel with this document to the Carribean and to Europe (Austria, Italy and France) with airplane and to the US with a personal car through the land border? Did you take any other documents with you other then this document? I have canadian driver's licence do I need international driving permit from CAA I'm planning to rent a car in Europe
Thank you in advance

The document allow You to travel. But You Will need a visa if the country you will visit request For it to the citizens of your country of origin.
Ask to the consulate of the country your are planning to visit if they accept RTD because some countries don't accept.
Good luck!

Thank you! My country of origin is hungary so I'll be fine in those European countries what I'd like to visit

I think yes. But always double check with the consulate. Better be sure they wont refuse the document.

Not true, RTD has nothing to do with your country of origin, for as long as that is the only travel document you are holding, you will be subjected to the rules of the countries that require Visas for RTD. Austria and France Require Visa, but you can visit Italy with RTD, no Visa.

Why you say has nothing to do with your country of origin, of course it has.
You are still citizen, national of your home country and they will apply the rules for that country even if you are refugee. I specific mean this according with the requirements of the visa.
For example, Im citizen/national of a country that other many countries requires us for a visa to travel. So this countries asked me for a visa (not suposition, I applied for the visa, Im speaking from my experience, not reading and article).
Not because you has a Refugee travel document of Canada they will treat you as a canadian. My suggestion to this person was to email, asked to the consulate of the country he/she will travel.
Countries has different rules but in general if they ask visa for your nationality, even with the RTD they will still ask you for the visa.

If traveling in the Schengen area and your home country which you sought protection from is Hungary I would save evidence of daily activities and where you stayed daily. I would even take pictures in front of recognizable monuments every day so that it is easy to prove you remained outside of Hungary. When it comes to immigration it is always up to the individual to prove they were compliant.

If Use your Google maps. That shows exactly where You were. Everyday. Easy to proof where You have been.

Easy to falsify but could be part of evidence you save. Which is why I suggest pictures, receipts, etc. Not an issue for all travellers on RTDs but a good idea in areas where borders are porous or open between neighbouring countries and your home country.

Of course the RTD has different treatments according with the nationality.

Just two examples: I’m from South America and I don’t need a visa for Colombia or Costa Rica when traveling with my RTD. My friend from Nicaragua, however, does need a visa for both countries, simply because of his nationality even having the "same" RTD.

The sources are the emails I received from those embassies and the IATA/TIMATIC system.

But some other countries like Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, I still need a visa, even thought I'd be exempt of it with my national passport.

I don’t think your nationality is important if you are holding RTD.

For example I don’t need visa for Indonesia with my national passport but because of I am holding rtd I need to get visa.

I need visa for Germany and Italy with my national passport but I can travel without visa bcz of I have Canadian rtd.

Whenever I emailed to the consulates they don’t ask my nationality. They just answered questions based on Canadian refugee travel document.

@Canadian_rainbow It would be amazing if can create a list of all the countries /embassy that you’ve contacted that welcomes RTD without PR as yet . It would be very helpful for persons like my self who’s interested in traveling :) Thank you .
