PR for Mother

Hi All,

My Father is deceased and my Mother lives in India. I wish to get PR for my Mother but she does not get shortlisted in the lottery. My sister is a New Zealand citizen and they are not open to parents' sponsorship.

What are my chances of securing PR for her if I apply on humanitarian grounds?

Almost a zero chance. PGP is her pathway and people now thing alll parents are H&C cases if parents not selected. What are the H&C reasons (being widowed is not just a reason). How long has she been visiting Canada? How old is she? What are her community ties etc to Canada?

Would add can she prove she is unable to care for herself in India even with some paid support. Many are the false impression that PR for parents is somehow easy or guaranteed in Canada. I also expect that H&C may need to ban parents from applying since people are using the H&C to replace PGP. We don’t have the infrastructure to accept any extra seniors realistically which is why PGP has a quota. Canada faces the same issues as in NZ. You need to be exploring options in home country and hope you are one of the lucky people who eventually get picked for PGP.

NZ has a parent sponsorship visa that qualifies a person for permanent residency after holding the resident visa for 10 years. The resident visa allows a parent to live in NZ, as well as work / study. This program only issues a limited number of visas each year but is open right now to new EOIs. If your sister hasn't done so already, would be a good idea to submit an EOI. It sounds like she may be under the mistaken impression this program is closed. I believe the next draw is late July or August.

I would agree with others that your mother's chances of a succesful H&C application in Canada will be on the lower side. If you apply, you have to be prepared for the possibility of a refusal and the consequenes that generally come with an H&C application refusal.

This should of been discussed PRIOR to you and your sister moving away

Not now

Adding , people have to STOP doing this . As mentioned it’s NOT a humanitarian issue . Both siblings never took the time to figure out what to do with your parents . That’s being neglectful, not humanitarian.

If they need someone there with them , then one flies back to care for them .
Strange , people never mention that

I appreciate all the responses.

I used to use this forum a lot during my PR days and citizenship days. The forum was a lot more helpful and a lot less judgmental back then.

Most of the responses I read above demonstrate less advice and a lot more of judgmental behaviour are clearly quite resentful - probably coz I am Indian and the judgmental people expecting me to be a freeloader.

Anyways, I dont think I would be using this forum much. Good job with the online trolling and 'keeping canada safe'.

To add some context you are part of a very large number of children who just assumed their parents could get PR in Canada and never made plans considering that PR for parents was far from guaranteed. Now these parents are overwhelming the H&C system, staying without status, moving to Canada on supervisas which are not meant for a permanent move, etc. Some hospitals who are already struggling are facing huge pressure from parents on supervisas and with bills going unpaid. This is also the government’s fault since a supervisa visit should have never been extended to 5 years. Canada does not have the capacity to care for existing seniors, many who are also immigrants, who are longterm taxpayers thus the frustration when people expect that their parents will be able to secure PR and there are no other plans that have been secured in their home country for longterm care.

Why not apply for a super visa for your mom ? this is the fast way to get her in Canada right ?
