I’m applying for Outland spousal sponsorship. My wife is a Canadian citizen currently in Québec. We plan to settle in another Canadian province and will select Ontario in the intended residence field of IMM 0008. We’ll also include a Letter of Intent + our move plan. Wouldn’t want her moving alone as it’s not an easy step to take alone while waiting.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone with a Québec-based sponsor (without a lease or ID in the selected province) successfully stayed in the federal stream (no CSQ or Québec undertaking)?
  2. What proof of intent to relocate did IRCC request, if any?
  3. Any pitfalls to watch out for?

You’re making your application much more difficult by your wife not relocating during processing or right away.

It’s really confusing cause I research and getting conflicting information, I see that stating your intended province to be outside Ontario is enough to put it in the federal process and other places say the Montreal address automatically puts in the the Quebec process. Moving right away would have made it straightforward as I have family in Ontario but she’s currently unable to till atleast the end of the year or early next year

The truth is we have very little concrete information on how they approach these things.

But: because the difference in processing time is so VERY long, and the general 'mood' in Quebec on this issue, and the general fed moves to slow immigration - it is prudent to do as much as you can to have the sponsor move ASAP.

Of course, if the applicant can get a visa and come to Canada, at least they can be together and (so far) get an open work permit, that's a bit less severe - but still incredibly long time to wait (potentially).
