I am in the final process of getting my PR and am also planning to get married to my boyfriend. I plan to sponsor him once I receive my PR as he would not be eligible to match the cutoff otherwise. I want to understand how I can plan the move to Canada and/or my wedding so that we do not have to spend much time apart especially once we're married. I have heard people get legally married after the engagement to start paperwork but I need to be physically in Canada and earning a regular income to be able to sponsor him. He doesn't even have a tourist visa yet. Any suggestions on how I should plan my wedding along with my PR? (My status is 'final decision pending' for the past 2 months)

I assume you are not living with him?

Make sure you do not get married until after you have landed in Canada and officially become a PR.

No, we live separately as of now. We have been waiting to get married but this PR timeline is severely delayed and I don't want to wait any further. How will it help to wait? I'd have to come back to India for the wedding anyway and that is another concern. I believe I have to wait a few months to get my PR card before I travel outside Canada. So isn't it better to get married first and then go there and sponsor him?

If you get married now and before you come to Canada and become a PR, you have to add him to your application.

We have seen many run into problems if they try to sponsor spouses from India without proof of traditional wedding ceremony. Canada is very familiar with wedding traditions in India. This is especially the case for relationships where there isn’t longterm proof of in person dating. For example if you’ve lived together and had a more western style dating relationship over years and have proof of this then a culturally appropriate wedding is less important.

We plan to get married in Jan 2025. I was hoping that by then, I would’ve received the PR and landed in Canada once. I could come back for the wedding and then sponsor him. Until then, he is applying for this family tourist visa now which will help him visit me for longer durations after the wedding. But since my PPR request has taken over 2 months, I’m concerned about the delays in timeline.
