Hello there,

I have been living in Canada for a long long time, 12 years.
I graduated from University and met a woman I was with for 5-6 years.
After school I was working and have been working ever since (always on work permit).

When the time came to apply for immigration she insisted that she sponsor me and we filed the papers together.
Little did I know that it wouldn't take 18 months but can be longer.
So now, after three years of waiting while not being able to leave the country at all, I finally was getting a positive response. That we had a few drawbacks in the relationship and broke up. Now, we have cancelled the application, and thankfully immigration Canada has allowed her sponsorship to be cancelled as well (so she wont have to worry about supporting me, if I go broke and go crying to the government).

I think all of the above gives an oversight to everything (even my stupidity :), so please spare me the statements that I was too stupid, love can do nasty things to your brain).

Now I am with a work permit (open) with an expiry in two years. I am eligible to apply for a skilled worker class, but I want to go visit my folks.
It has been such a long time (8 years), so my Question is, can I apply for a visa to re-enter Canada (provided I am on an open work permit that was issued based on my sponsor PR application) ? if so, where shall I look or start ?

on a personal note, living in Canada is awesome, and I am proud to be able to contribute to this society, but I am also thinking of migrating away somewhere else. Being on a low budget, I am still exploring my options. I am seeking advise on a personal note as well, shall I leave my job, and consider trying to settle down somewhere else, seeing I am just disheartened by how sooo long sometimes an immigration application take (even 11 months seem so long right now) ?
