Hello,

I'm currently working at a public university in Montreal and came to the country with a short-term (120 day) work permit exemption for researchers. The project I am working on is getting extended now and I would like to continue working in Canada. I am enrolled as a student in a German university but not inside Canada. Will I need to apply for a separate work permit to extend my stay in Canada or is it possible to increase the duration of my current visa? If the time required to process the work permit application exceeds the duration of my current work permit exemption, am I still allowed to remain and or work in Canada?

Thanks in advance!

You cannot increase or extend the duration of the current visa. It's strictly limited to the 120 days.

Yes, you need to apply for a work permit.

Once the 120 days ends under the work permit exemption, you need to stop working until the work permit is approved. You cannot continue working while waiting for the work permit.
