Hello all,

My friend got his PR on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and he sponsored his family. When he applied for sponsorship, he sighed an understanding to financially sponsor them for a period of time. Does that mean he won’t receive any government assistance for that period of time?

Please reply if you have a clear answer.

Thanks

Since he sponsored his family for PR through spousal sponsorship, he cannot receive social assistance during the sponsorship support period. If he or his family members take social assistance during this period, he will have to repay his money back to the government.

Does that include child tax benefits and OSAP and any assisted-government benefits? Thanks

No, this doesn't include OSAP or child benefits. These are not social assistance. Social assistance is welfare.

He can access child tax benefits through CRA. OSAP is a loan/grant program so will have loans to repay after completing post secondary so not an issue. For Ontario, social assistance is Ontario Works and ODSP.
