Hey zakout76:

ok, I just took the test yesterday (november 21st, 2009) and here's what I got to share:

I don't realy know what's the difference between TOEFL and IELTS since it appears that schools also accept the IELTS (I may be totally wrong on this and is off the topic), but the IELTS has a british accent that would make it difficult for somebody say like me in the american continent in which the USA english accent is the one been use in the clasrooms, besides that's the one we are accostumed to hear in TV, movies, etc.., so if this is your case i suggest you star searching for british like accent movies or something to get yourself acquainted with it; but going back to the test; the examiners were pretty laid back and cool with everybody, the first thing that they told us when they let us in to the test room was to r e l a x . . . .

DON'T RELAX!!!!, the exam is pretty easy to do (realy) there is nothing complicated about it, what ever knowledge of the lenguage you need has been taught to you many years (i'm sure) ago.

I'ts the time!, there only give you an specific time to do the 3 sections of the test and they will not give you any extra; and why would you need any extra time, you may be asking yourself; well because in the time alloted for the 3 parts of the exam (30 min for listening with 10 minutes for writing your answers to the answers sheet, 1 hr for the reading and another 1 hr for the writting part);....well here's it is:

unless you go about your daily life writting everything down the old fashion way with a pen and paper like 20 years ago when they designed the __continued:

__test (which i doubt since we both use a computer to communicate) you don't have the speed necesary to finish the test with spare time to kill, maybe that one of the purposes of the test is to see how familiarized with the language are you, i realy don't know but i sure wish i had and extra 10 minutes on each part to listen, read or writte, i think i did pretty good but i could've done better if i was a faster writter insted of a decent typer.

anywho, good luck on yours, but please write anything in english so you don't get crams in your hand on the test day like a bunch of us did yesterday!

I gave my test a few months back and got a Band of 8. I considered that a low score as my schooling was in English medium and have been communicating in the language for a long time.

Here are my observations.
  • Definitely use Reading material, http://www.amazon.com/Cambridge-IELTS-Students-Book-Answers/dp/0521739179/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258919190&sr=8-1 is the official subject matter as that institute is part of the group that creates the questions. I practiced with it for a week.
  • Don't be over-confident, in my case writing was where I had a tough time as the 2 essays have to be written within a set time was difficult.
  • Listening was easy as it was objective type but you have to keep in sync with what is being said and have a map of the questions in the paper. I went out of sync in one and had to guess at the end what made sense.
  • The final interview is interesting because you can get easily overwhelmed by the conversation. The chat is on a formal topic and you have to give importance to the conversation style to be appropriate and correct. The person in front of you is expression-less. Though I managed to bring a smile to her face, she was careful not to be loud because all of it was getting recorded!

In all, take it seriously as an examination. Sure it seems downright silly to have to repeat exams that you took a decade or so back. But at the end of the day, you can end up getting a bad grade because you were careless.

Hope some of my observations are helpful to you.

Yes, you can get a 8 if you practice and work hard at it. At first I thought I can crack an English exam easily but as you start practicing you realize that there is more method and preparation involved.

So practice as much as you can and have a stopwatch in front of you to manage your time and find out where you are spending most of your time.
