Best places to live in Toronto for family with young, active kids

Hello all! Long time no post. We landed in Vancouver in Oct 2011 but I had to work in NYC shortly after. But we are returning for good in October 2013. We are looking to settle down in Toronto (due to job and since my family likes the more fast-paced lifestyle).

Can you give recommendations for best areas for a family to live in in the GTA (except downtown or outer suburbs)? Our criteria includes:
1. Near good elementary and high schools.
2. Close to or having easy access to subway system and amenities (like groceries, shopping mall).
3. A safe, friendly neighborhood mainly populated also by working parents and young kids (ours are 11 and 10).

We will need a 2 BR apartment. If you know of realtors or rentals in your suggested areas, please let me know, too!
