i called immigration and they said yes technically it can be done on a visitor visa. although your reentry to canada everytime is at the discretion of port of entry officer.

I just need appropriate valid status in canada which will allow me to do so(stay with spouse and work in US), if there is any. sounds like I might be better off consulting a lawyer ultimately. but any inputs here, like yours, will give me more insight before time.
