Hello Everyone!

Background:

I am a Hong Kong permanent resident (The principal applicant) and my husband is a Canadian Citizen living outside of Canada (The Sponsor).

We have two children together, the first one already has her Canadian citizenship certificate, we are now applying for me and our second child from HONG KONG but we will be in Canada visiting when we hope to be approved.

Questions:

1 Do I (the principal applicant) need to provide a Birth Cert?

I was born in China and the Birth Cert is in Chinese. But I am a PR of Hong Kong and have the Passport.

2 Can I apply in Hong Kong but get it while I stay in Canada?

Our case is straightforward, if there's no interview required, can I have the paperwork forwarded to Canada or do I have to go back to Hong Kong to pick it up?

Any help would be GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED...thanks everyone!

Hi

1. Yes, as per the checklist, you must provide your birth certificate.

2. Yes, you can apply outland and then come to Canada as a visitor while the PR app processes.

When you come to Canada, you need to update your address. IRCC will send your COPR to your Canadian address.

As your first child is Canadian, I'm going to assume that your second child is Canadian as well. Canadian children cannot be included as dependents in your application. The child also can't travel to Canada on their foreign passport, as Canadian citizens don't qualify for eTAs. You need to apply for their Certificate of Citizenship app ASAP. If the child is under the age of 2, you can apply concurrently for a limited validity Canadian passport.

Hi canuck_in_uk,

Thank you very very very much!

Just to double confirm... Are you SURE we can apply out-land and get my COPR in Canada?
(I assume I should get the police cert and medical check in Hong Kong first when I apply so I don't have to do it while in Canada?)

Do they only need the police cert and medical check from the principal applicant?

Oops I think I got something wrong. So my second child is not a 'dependent child'.
Do I apply for this one for him?

Yes, I'm sure. Many thousands of people, including my partner and I, have done this. The medical is generally cheaper in Canada, so you may want to wait. It would probably be easier to get the PCC while you are there.

Yes, you are the only person who needs the medical and PCCs.

No. You need to follow the same process as you did for your older child and apply for the Certificate of Citizenship.

Wow what's a big relief for us. Thanks again.

Oh you think Canada will be cheaper than Hong Kong for the medical check?? Any idea how much? I don't even know if the price is standard in HK, how much?

Please remind me what form/procedures I have to do for the second child? I totally forgot. I just remember having to go to the Canadian consulate in HK.

Thank you...

Hi...

One more question here!

If I mail my application to the IRCC in Feb, when / how fast will they need a Police Certificate from me?

I'm planing to go to Canada in July and wait there! Is this going to work out?...

Thanks!

Medicals in Canada can be hundreds of dollars cheaper because there are so many more Panel Physicians. You would need to call around to get some prices to confirm.

It would most likely be requested a few months after you apply.

Make sure you get your child's documents sorted ASAP. He will need a Canadian passport to travel to Canada in July.

Thank you...

My husband just did his medical in HK (Medical centre @ Jordan), the cost was $2400.

Also, the child has to apply for the certificate of citizenship before he/she can apply for the Canadian passport. The process of citizenship certificate took 8-12 months!!! then the passport took another month. You need to act asap and see if there's an option to pay for express processing (not sure if they have that for citizenship though).

Hi prettycincin,

Thanks, is $2400 the fixed/standard price in HK?

I have all the docs ready for his citizenship app, will walk-in tomorrow to do it. My first child's took 8 months I think.

And we will be able to apply for his Canadian Passport once I have the receipt for his citizenship app! Says on the website ;

•If your child does not have the proof of Canadian citizenship, all of the following conditions must also be satisfied:
◦Applicant must present the receipt for submitting the child’s citizenship application

◦Child must be 2 years old or younger at the time of the passport application submission

◦Proof of travel with confirmed payment (no earlier than 8 weeks prior the departure date) or residency requirement must be presented

◦Either parent’s proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate or Canadian citizenship card)

:)

I think it's fixed, as you have no other places to go, they have different panel physicians but they all belong to the same medical centre. You can make an appointment online or call them, the list can be found on the Canadian immigration website (can't post links here).

Hi canadianmepls, i have a fairly similar case as yours. For mine, i m the sponsor and my wife is the PR applicant. Our 2 kids are born Canadian (i think the same for your kids) so they dont need anything but a Cdn passport to return to Canada.

Thank you guys!
Our second child's proof of citizenship is in progress!

One question on the spousal sponsorship!

For my Birth certificate translation(Chinese into English), do I need the notarization???

Another question on my second child's passport:

He's entered Canada before using the eTA and his HK passport.
Now that's his proof of citizenship is in progress, it will be sent off to Canada.

Can he travel with a valid eTA and his HK passport to Canada even if the proof of citizenship is ready to be picked up in Canada?

Thanks!

Well, the fact that he has an eTA means you lied when applying for it by not declaring the child's Canadian citizenship. He is Canadian and therefore doesn't actually qualify for an eTA.

The eTA was approved and we went to Canada.

Then I applied for the proo of Canadian citizenship.

The lady in the Canadian consulate in HK said as long as the eTA is valid then there's no problem. So I'm not sure!!!

Both of my children have the eTA, we did it before the new rules for dual citizens having to have their Canadian passports came out.
