I'm starting the process of sponsoring my husband but I need to write a letter to immigrations. I need help with the format or what I should and should not have in the letter,

for sponsoring a spouse on the check list, #7 it ask

Are you and your spouse currently living together?
my husband is currently in Canada with me and doesn't plan on going back to the uk while things are being processed
I called immigrations today and asked them about the question and I was told by her to say yes, but under "Yes" it ask to have two of the following:

  • Proof of joint ownership of residential property.
  • Rental agreement showing both you and your sponsor as occupants of a rental property.
  • Proof of joint utility accounts (eg. electricity, gas, telephone, internet), joint credit card accounts, or joint bank accounts.(Submit a minimum of 1 joint bill).
  • Vehicle insurance showing that both you and your sponsor have been declared to the insurance company as residents of the insured's address.
  • Copies of government issued documents for you and your sponsor showing the same address (eg.: driver's licenses)(Submit a minimum of 1 government issued document for each person).
  • Other documents issued to you or your sponsor showing the same address, whether the accounts are held jointly or not (e.g.cell phone bills, pay stubs, tax forms, bank or credit card statements, insurance policies). (Submit a minimum of 1 document for each person.)

which because he's here as a visitor we don't have any of that and I looked into him getting on my benefits and lease but was told they cant because he has to show he's a temporary resident or permanent resident which will happen when we put the extended stay and work permit application. So I was told to write a letter for that section explaining why we don't have that documentation.

my questions are:

  1. How long does this explanation need to be
  2. is there a special format I should be using
  3. what details need to be in this letter
and if anyone could, can you please show some examples or tell me what should be explained

please help any advice will very helpful for us

It doesn't have to be letter as such.. Just an "explanation sheet" explaining the details. A simple word doc.

It can be however long it needs to be. No format, however with any additional/non form sheets you put in your app I would put PA name, sponsor name, app type and form or question it relates at the top of the page.

Saying all that.. Just because your partner is a visitor it doesn't mean that you can't have the items you mentioned. He can most definitely get a bank account/be named on a credit card of yours, have some form of insurance with you, have bills and be added to any existing lease.

Think carefully about submitting an app with NONE of the listed things..an explanation as to why you don't have any of them isn't going to cut it.

Hello! I never wrote a letter for the exact reason you are, but I wrote two letters for our application, one explaining our intentions to return to Canada (we are applying Outland) and one explaining how I intend to support my partner financially. What I did with my first letter was just typed in a standard letter format, date at the top and I also put a little title in the heading regarding which question I was answering from the Checklist so for the first one it said “Proof of Intent to Move to Canada - My Name” and then in the body I wrote something along the lines of:
“To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter to show my intent to move back to Canada upon successful approval of my partner’s application for permanent residency under my sponsorship.” .... and began to list reasons why we would return to Canada. I finished it with “Sincerly, My Name” (and signed underneath). My letters were 1 and 2 pages long. From what I’ve read, it’s best to include as much information as you can and fully explain yourself so I wouldn’t worry if your letter is more or less than that. I also don’t think there’s an exact format, you can do it how it best suits you, but I’d make sure your name is on it somewhere. Just try to be clear and to the point. The letters should be serious but I also think some personal touches will help you sound like a human so don’t be afraid to get into detail.

I think in your case, I would address each of those bullet points and explain why you can’t get any of those things, give proof that you have tried all options and say that if you could, then you would have those things. Have you ever in the past lived together somewhere else and had any of those? I would mention that as well. Write in the letter how long he’s been living there and explain your future plans and that you intent to do these things as soon as it’s available to you. Maybe if you can get a neighbour or a friend who can vouch that he’s been living there to write a letter saying they know it to be true that he lives there to back you up. Is he contributing in any way financially? If yes, you can write about how he pays you for rent and include a copy of bank statement or something that might be helpful.

I would ask someone he knows back from the UK to write a letter to him at your address and you could include it as mail he’s received to your address. It’s not a very strong piece of evidence but it’s something.

Also have you tried getting his name added to your internet bill or phone bill or anything similar to that as a joint account holder which you could use as your address? Has he tried to get a drivers license with the address or open a new bank account? Sorry I’m just throwing shots in the dark as I’m not sure if he could get those as a visitor but it might be worth trying! Hopefully this helps you a little bit!

If I were you I would not apply without these proofs. Whatever you were told is not true.

My husband was a visitor in Canada and we got: drivers license with same address, joint bills, shared lease, shared benefits, joint savings account.

CIC knows visitors in Canada are able to obtain these things and likely won't care about an explanation letter.

I have to agree with this! We added my husband to my home insurance, added hom as a beneficiary to my rrsps, added him
To a cell phone bill as well as a work benefit recipient... there are many ways around this
