Hi everyone.
I'm a Canadian, who would like to get my American husband of 2.5 years into Canada. I've been reviewing the forums, and I see that we can apply inland or out. Two questions for you all…
1) Legally, can he come to Canada with me as a visitor, knowing he's going to stay, and then apply for his PR inland?
2) If we do go about applying inland, can he work? Or are we stuck with only me working during the 11-12 months it's going to take?

THANKS for your time. Any info is appreciated, as we are just getting into this process.

If your husband is a US Citizen it makes absolutely no sense at all for you two to file an Inland application. File Outland, it will be quicker by far and he can STILL come with you to Canada. No he won't be able to work.

Straightfoward US applications are taking 3-7 months for TOTAL approval time for outland applications. DO NOT APPLY INLAND. You will for sure hate life if you make that mistake. Just ask the US applicants currently stuck in inland processing right now. If you apply inland, YES, you husband can not work until AFTER stage 1 approval, which is 12-14 months right now. If he applies OUTLAND, he's legal to work in 3-7 months, depending how long it takes CIC to process his application. Either way, if your husband is in canada as a visitor while his application is submitted, he can not work for any canadian company. If he has the type of job he can work remotely for a US employer, he can do that while he waits for approval.

Ok, so outland it is. Easy choice. If anyone has quick access to the processing times link, I'd love to have a peek at it.

I'm assuming he's still allowed to travel into Canada and visit me during the application process?

Thanks for your help. We just finished our US permanent resident card for me… Now to go back home to Canada. Hahah.

Processing times listed on CIC website are pretty much useless and inaccurate. To get a real indication of actual times, go to the CPC-Ottawa thread on this site and see what times people are recently seeing for US application.

Yes he can travel to Canada and stay with your during the entire PR processing time. Just stress to CBSA when crossing the border he is only visiting.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your time!
