We have an employee who is from South Africa and has been working here seasonally for a number of years. He made his application early January for his work visa and now CIC is asking for "Submission of a Canadian certified check in your name". They are also asking for digitized fingerprints.
He has never had any issues before and usually only took 3-4 weeks in previous years.

Any idea what they are asking for?

He lives in South Africa - where can he get digitized fingerprints? The police agency in SA does not provide digitized fingerprints. He got his fingerprints and sent them to the office but they were not digitized.

Are they wanting a Canadian Criminal Record Check?

Here is part of the email they sent:

If you have not obtained digitized fingerprints or submitted them to the CCRTIS:

As per the RCMP’s website, to submit fingerprints to the CCRTIS from outside Canada, you must first contact the local police agency that provides fingerprinting services. Ensure you get the name and address of the police agency as well as the signature and name of the official taking the fingerprints. Please ensure all ten fingers are taken with black ink.

Next, you must request the police agency to digitize your paper fingerprints and submit them to CCRTIS electronically. If the local police agency is unable to provide this service, you must contact an accredited company within Canada.

Once your digitized fingerprints are received, the CCRTIS will be able to conduct a Canadian certified check in your name and the results will be sent to you. Once the results of your Canadian certified check are received, you are required to submit them to the processing office
