My wife is currently trying to sponsor me for Permanent residency ( im from the USA) she is Canadian we got married over 2 years ago .. all our paper work is complete and has been sent in. Its been over 2 years and we have not heard anything.. all we get is in progress.. Can I get a work permit ? all I want is to be able to work and help support my family

Did you apply inland our outland?

I am assuming inland because I have never seen a case of USA outland applicants waiting that long... When you say you haven't heard anything, you mean nothing at all? No request for additional documents or proof, nothing like that?

Also, someone correct me if I am wrong, if you applied inland, you would've applied for the Open Work Permit at the same time 2 years ago and would've been able to work about 4 months after that...

Please provide more info for us to help you...

this isn't exactly 100% true. the OWP pilot program where inland applicants are getting permits after 4 months is relatively new, and started in Dec 2015, so if this poster applied for PR prior to that, then they wouldn't necessarily have applied for the OWP with the PR application.
There are many people who did apply for an OWP with the PR application prior to the pilot program. For those who did this, they would have to wait until AIP was received before their OWP would be processed.

To the OP... Unfortunately, for inland applicants it's quite normal to not hear a thing for 2 years until CIC picks up the application for processing. have you ordered your GSMC notes to see what's going on with your application? Have you tried to contact your MP to see if they can get an update? You may want to consider applying for the OWP now to see if you can get it approved and if you are approved for one, that might give you some insight about what's going on with your PR application.

i agree more information is needed to provide specific help...
