Hi Everyone,

I have submitted a spouse sponsorship application/ from inside in June 2013 . Me and my husband are living together now in Toronto . He is a Norwegian Citizen and I have attached a work permit application with the sponsorship application because I read that we should send them together one time. my questions 1: I was permanent resident when I applied and now I became Canadian Citizen , Should I inform CIC the application centre about that ? 2 : I'm pregnant and my due date is soon, Should I inform CIC about this , Is it going to affect positive ? I want my husband to get the work permit first to start working and support the family while I'm in the Maternity leave , Is there any way for him to get the work permit first and we will continue waiting for the PR card??

Thank you!

1) It might be a good idea but I am not sure that it's mandatory.
2) Same answer as 1).
3) Your husband's Open Work Permit application will not be expedited just because you are pregnant or a new mother. He would have to apply for a job in the same way as any other temporary foreign worker. Details are on the CIC website. Otherwise, he cannot work.

The open work permit will be issued once the application has first stage approval (AIP). The processing time for the first stage is currently 11 months.

The only issue about informing CIC about you becoming a Canadian Citizen is that you will be able to leave and enter Canada without affecting the PR sponsorship. If you were still a PR, you wouldn't be allowed to leave Canada during the entire PR process. Now you can. But inform CIC of this so that when you do decide to leave Canada, it won't affect PR sponsorship. You don't want CIC to cancel sponsorship because they thought you are still PR during the process.

I thought CIC also processes citizenship papers. Is there any need to inform them that one has become a citizen at a time when they are sponsoring a spouse?

Yes, while CIC also process citizenship, who is to say that they actually share the info between sponsorship department/citizenship department. I am sure they don't exactly run a tight ship over there. Wouldn't be surprised if the sponsorship department does not know that the sponsor has become citizen. They only have the application in front of them which listed sponsor as PR. Just want PO to be on the safe side if PO intends or want to leave Canada during sponsorship. If PO has no intention on leaving Canada during the process, then it is moot point to contact CIC about citizenship.
