Hi, appreciate your help.

I signed a contract with a Canadian company which sponsored an application for a work permit, the work permit took a long time to process, by the time it got issued the job the company needed me for was no longer available, and we're waiting for another post to become available.

my questions are:

  • Is there a time by which I have to get into the country and start the work permit, or is that open for the validity period of the work permit? I currently have a work permit approval letter.

  • Can I visit the country using the travel visa without starting the work permit? and can I start the work permit without actually starting to work? or will that have tax implications?

  • I suppose there is no way to turn the closed work permit to an open one or to apply to other companies without having to repeat the whole application process?
Appreciate your support.
Best Regards.

I'll help with the last question. No way to turn this into an open work permit.

So you have an approved LMIA for this job with an approved closed work permit? If the NOC or location changes, then employer will need to amend the LMIA. Upon entry, you may be asked for proof of employment on your closed work permit. It is possible you could be denied entry because you don’t have a job. There are no tax implications because you are not working. You are not eligible for an open work permit.
