If you are outside of Canada, then no Canadian work permit is required. However the Canadian company must obviously allow you to work for them from outside of Canada. This also will not count as Canadian work experience.
A Canadian open work permit doesn't allow you to live in the US. You would need to have a separate US permit that allows you to do that.
