Good morning everyone,

I have a few questions and I'd really appreciate your knowledge and advice.

My wife (a Canadian citizen) is sponsoring me (a US citizen) outland. I'm currently an employee of a US company, which does business in the US, and I'm paid in US funds etc. Is it correct that if I visit my wife while the PR is pending, that I can telecommute to this job while in Canada? I'm using the TFW Guideline 5.1 as my basis, but I'm worried that there's another rule that supersedes this somewhere.

Now, here's the complicated twist. The company, by sheer Murphy's Law, is having an annual meeting in Canada this year. I've been asked to attend, and in a perfect world I would spend a few weeks afterward with my wife. Should I avoid this event at all costs? If I do go, should I not mix business and family, and so return to the US directly after? Also, should I make clear to the immigration officer that I have a PR pending, even if I decide not to visit my wife? (I'm guessing the answer to that last one is yes; I'm just most worried about entering Canada for a reason related to my job, and whether that spoils the pot if I want to telecommute on future visits.)

Thank you very much for any answers you can share.

We are in the same situation and we also understood that my husband will be able to work remotely for his US employer while he visits me in Canada. We are both currently living in the US, but I will be moving back next month, and he will visit until his application for PR is processed. I don't know of anything that would contradict what is in TFW 5.1 (it's states it pretty clearly that telecommute work for a foreign employer is fine).

I'm not sure if your company meeting is a complicating factor or not. Hopefully someone else here can provide some guidance. Always answer any questions at the border truthfully - you will be asked the purpose of your trip, and if you will only be attending the meeting and not visiting your wife, then "attending company meeting" will be you answer, and if it doesn't come up on the data base that you are in process for PR, there may be no further questions. If you will be also be visiting your wife, answer accordingly and be prepared to show your plans/intent to only "visit" and have copies of your CIC payment receipt and stage 1 approval, etc. with you. (Of course you will always have with those documents with you when traveling to Canada.)
