Hello
My husband and I got married last year in April and applied for permanent residency and a work permit in August 2011 (both were sent to vegreville within the same file). My question is, will the work permit be issued at the same time he gets his permanent residency, or will that be issued at a different time from the PR status approval?
Please help!
Sarah :)

If he's given Approval in principle, his open work permit will be granted at the same time. PR status will come after, as they have to schedule a landing appointment, and that can takes weeks to months depending on what local CIC office will serve you for that.

i think you are applying for inland sponsorship and your husband can get open work permit after sponsorship approval (first stage approval)
best of luck :)

Thanks for the replies. First stage approval will be when we recieve some notification after the 13 month or so waiting period, correct? Im still not clear, do we have to file seperately for his work permit once we are approved? Or does it come automatically? If we have to apply for it, how long does it typically take?

I take it you did not apply for his work permit concurrently with his PR, then. If that is the case, you may go ahead and apply for it now that you have AIP. It is not automatic, it is a separate application, and many persons file them together and request that the OWP not be considered until AIP is considered. So you need to file one now that you have AIP and did not do so initially.

If you included the work permit/extension application WITH the inland PR ap, the OWP will be issued automatically as soon as he passes the first stage of assessment. If you didn't include it with the PR ap, he'll have to apply once he receives notification of first stage approval. The letter will include instructions. Typically I think the OWP and notification letter arrive pretty close to the same time if you included the OWP ap with the inland PR ap.

After that, it's another 6-8 months for finalization of the ap, usually depending on how long it takes to do the background checks, which are part of the second stage. You'll get notification when 2nd stage is complete that the application has been transferred to your local office, and they will contact him for a "landing" interview.
