Hi Everyone,
I am from Italy and recently I was chosen for a volunteer work about whales in BC for two month. Obviously I will not be paid and I will participate in the living expenses. The organization is a NGO and No-profit. I am writing because I have some doubts if I need a particular VISA or an eTa is enough? I searched on different sites but I could not have a clear answer. Could somebody please help me to clear my doubts and give some good suggestions, please? ??? ???

I suspect you need a work permit. If it's a job that people are normally or sometimes paid to do, then a work permit is typically required.

Thank you for your fast reply.
For what I know they seem to have volunteer position for a period of time during the year, without being paid (almost sure).

Quick Google would have given you this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/work/about.asp

As for volunteering with whales in BC I guess depends how convincing that is that you are not in fact working in a position that a local could do and be paid for but maybe I am overthinking things and maybe you need to get some support from the organisation you plan to volunteer with such as a confirmation letter re unpaid volunteering.

One tip though think carefully about the words you use when speaking to CBSA on arrival given any mention of work even if unpaid may generate a whole load of questions. Do not of course misrepresent yourself but do not on other hand volunteer information to CBSA , only answer questions asked .

Ultimately I guess the decision is with the CBSA officer at the border but if asked purpose of visit having a letter to hand will probably support your case
