Why do I need to link my application?

Hello friends ^^

So I'm sponsoring my husband under the family class category and we have received the first email yesterday from CIC , the email was sent to my account ( the sponsor ) not to my husband !

I don't understand the reason behind linking the application to an online account !? is this a necessary step everyone has to do ? I thought once we provide an email address that is sufficient for communication !

Please clarify and advise on how to link the application if it's mandatory to do so !

It's not mandatory, but it's helpful for receiving updates and seeing the status of your application. There are something you should always get emails about regardless if you link (aor, medical request). But there are updates along the way they won't email you about but you can see them if you've linked. For example, the only way we knew we passed the medical and have now been started on the Background check was through seeing the update on our linked online account (They didn't send us an email about those things). You can also check your status using ECAS but this is less detailed and they won't send any communication that way. When you link, you'll still get emails but they'll usually say "There's a new message in your online account, please log in and read them" etc. It also provides you with a place to upload additional documents if required. But even if you don't link it, you can still upload things using the online webform.
