Why birth certificates?

Why does everyone, or at least MOST of the people's posts I have seen on here include birth certificates in their application? It doesn't say anywhere that you need it does it? Am I missing something here? If so, please don't tell me we need to get this translated by a certified translator..................

Birth certificates are required from applicants, it is the first and most basic piece of government identification anyone gets. In most cases, your birth certificate is also proof of your citizenship.

If it is not in English or French, then yes, it must be translated by a certified translator.

Applicants as in the sponsor AND the principal applicant?

Ok, I know it's the first and most basic government ID...but does it say anywhere that we need this?

It is listed on the document checklists.
I believe it is just the PR applicant that needs to send a copy of the birth cert.

Identity and Civil documents... that's refering to the birth certificate? Ok then I'm ok!

I think it differs for every country what they call this, am i correct? Mine's Japan and it's called Koseki Tohon.

A marriage certificate, birth certificate, Family Register or certified official copy and a translation of your unaltered "Koseki Tohon" and "Kaiseigen Koseki Tohon" (all names in the register, even the ones that have been removed due to death, marriage, change of residence, etc) including details of your birth, marriage and divorce (if any) must be submitted. All names of your family members, even the ones that have been removed due to death, marriage, change of residence, etc., must be included. The translation should be in English or French and done by a certified translator.

I actually did not send my birth certificate. I've never seen it, never used it for anything, and have no idea how to go about getting it from my birth country (which doesn't technically exist anymore.....it's the Soviet Union). CIC has yet to complain about it though.......

I called CIC to clarify whether or not I needed a birth certificate, because the forms and checklists weren't completely clear about that.

They said, that since I am coming here as a spouse, the ties I need to prove are the ties to my spouse. So I need to give them a marriage certificate, not a birth certificate.

I hope the person on the phone actually knew what he was talking about..!
