I have my niece living with me and her boyfriend is from the US. I was under the impression that he was working on his papers but it seems I am wrong. Time flies and I thought he has been here for a couple of years but it seems it's been 6 years.

He stays home and my niece supports him. The whole family knows and we have been urging him to do what is right but it's not happening. Can I get in trouble for allowing to stay with me and can my family get in trouble. What would happen to him at this point if somebody decided to report him or if he went to the embassy or get an immigration lawyer....would really appreciate some advice

Do you know what kind of visa he is under, if any at all. You say he needs to file papers. What kind is he supposed to be filling out?

Assuming he's only come here under a visitor's status and nothing else, he only had 6 months, so he would be very much illegal. The best thing he could do is file for common-law sponsorship with your niece or they get married and she sponsors him.

As for your family getting in trouble, I would assume only he would be in trouble. I could be wrong and my responce is filled with a lot of assumptions. You were scarce on info.

You will not get in trouble but he will get in trouble if he is caught. He will be deported and very likely banned from Canada for some time. If your niece is planning to marry him, she could do that and sponsor him for PR. Him being illegal in Canada will not speed up or help their application though.

thank you that was incredibly helpful. Was a little scared I was putting myself in a compromising situation.
